Nell Fortner Former University of Texas volleyball player Nell Fortner was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Fortner received a dual-sport scholarship at Texas, where she played both basketball and volleyball from 1978-82. She helped lead UT to 127 basketball wins in four seasons and remains one of the Longhorns’ all-time leading scorers with 1,466 career points. In volleyball, she was a member of Texas’ national championship team as a senior in 1981.

On the basketball court, she led Texas to its first-ever national ranking in women’s basketball and a 7th-place finish at the AIAW national championship tournament. She also represented the United States internationally in basketball.

Fortner has established a professional reputation in the game of basketball. She started her coaching career at Killeen High School the year after she graduated from Texas, and eventually would become the head coach at Purdue, for the Indiana Fever in the WNBA, with Auburn University, and for USA Basketball. She led Purdue to a Big Ten title in 1997 and Auburn to an SEC title in 2009.

She has worked as an analyst for ESPN, and has also been inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame (2013) and the University of Texas Women’s Athletics Hall of Honor (2001).
