1893

First Longhorn football manager- Walter Crawford.

Although UT began playing football in 1893, the first hired coach for the Horns was Reginald DeMerritt Wentworth who contracted to work for the 1894 season for $325.  However, Wentworth’s true title was not “coach” but “trainer,” although the only training he appear to have recommended to the young Longhorn team was to practice and run plays.

Even with a segregated south, Doc Reeves managed to get a job at the UT athletic office that lasted from 1895 to 1915.    He was the ultimate pioneer for blacks in the history of Texas Sports. His hard work and the respect he earned eventually led to his position on the football team as water boy , assistant to the coaches, and equipment manager, and the name “Doc”. His tools were a medicine , towel, and water bucket and he took care of the football players. He did everything in his power to heal the athletes and along the way became the bench mark for future managers and trainers.  In one publication he was called “the most famous character connected with the football in the University of Texas.”  Once an school official released him but the student body protested, and Doc kept his job.  In 1915 Doc suffered a stroke and died 2 months later.  The student body paid for his hospital bills.

McClendon later served as chief justice on the Texas Court of Civil Appeals. He shares that being the manager “was practically an all-time job.” He had to do everything and he had no clerical assistance. “I collect the money, arranged for the home games and trips and everything you can imagine. I finally had to give it up” because he was missing law school classes.

Julius House and Snakey Jones were the captains.
